Glossary

Angina: constricting type of chest pain that develops due to a reduced blood supply to the heart. The pain can radiate down the arm or into the jaw. Complete blockage of the artery can lead to a heart attack.

Artery: a blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body.

Atherosclerosis: build up of fat or cholesterol deposits inside the artery wall, causing narrowing of the arteries.

Body Mass Index (BMI): Your BMI will indicate whether you are carrying too much weight for your frame. It is calculated by dividing your weight (kg) by your height squared (height x height = m2) to give you a number expressed as kg/m2

Cerebrovascular disease: disease of the arteries supplying the brain. Complete blockage of the artery can lead to a stroke.

Hypercholesterolaemia: too much bad cholesterol in the blood.

Metabolic Syndrome: A person is diagnosed with Metabolic Syndrome when he/she is obese, plus any two of the following: high blood triglycerides, low HDL-cholesterol, high blood pressure and high blood glucose. For more information on metabolic syndrome, speak to your doctor.

Peripheral arterial disease: disease of the arteries that supply the peripheral body, e.g. the arms and the legs.

Type 1 diabetes: early-onset sugar disease (diabetes) that requires treatment with insulin.

Type 2 diabetes: late-onset sugar disease (diabetes) that initially requires treatment with oral anti-diabetic medicines, but may require insulin treatment.

Vein: a blood vessel that carries oxygen-starved blood from the body to the heart.
